A rectangular tank measuring 57 cm by 50 cm by 40 cm was filled with water to a height of 26 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 32 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 32 - 26
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 50 x 57 x 6
= 17100 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 17100 ÷ 9
= 1900 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 40 - 32
= 8 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 50 x 57 x 8
= 22800 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
22800 cm
3 = 22.8 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1900 cm
3; (b) 22.8 ℓ
