A rectangular tank measuring 60 cm by 51 cm by 39 cm was filled with water to a height of 26 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 26
= 8 cm
Total volume of water added
= 51 x 60 x 8
= 24480 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 24480 ÷ 9
= 2720 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 39 - 34
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 51 x 60 x 5
= 15300 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
15300 cm
3 = 15.3 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2720 cm
3; (b) 15.3 ℓ
