A rectangular tank measuring 64 cm by 47 cm by 42 cm was filled with water to a height of 26 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 32 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 32 - 26
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 47 x 64 x 6
= 18048 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 18048 ÷ 6
= 3008 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 42 - 32
= 10 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 47 x 64 x 10
= 30080 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
30080 cm
3 = 30.08 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3008 cm
3; (b) 30.08 ℓ
