A rectangular tank measuring 57 cm by 54 cm by 37 cm was filled with water to a height of 23 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 23
= 11 cm
Total volume of water added
= 54 x 57 x 11
= 33858 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 33858 ÷ 9
= 3762 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 37 - 34
= 3 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 54 x 57 x 3
= 9234 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
9234 cm
3 = 9.234 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3762 cm
3; (b) 9.234 ℓ
