A rectangular tank measuring 62 cm by 49 cm by 40 cm was filled with water to a height of 30 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 30
= 3 cm
Total volume of water added
= 49 x 62 x 3
= 9114 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 9114 ÷ 6
= 1519 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 40 - 33
= 7 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 49 x 62 x 7
= 21266 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
21266 cm
3 = 21.266 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1519 cm
3; (b) 21.266 ℓ
