A rectangular tank measuring 60 cm by 47 cm by 38 cm was filled with water to a height of 22 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 22
= 12 cm
Total volume of water added
= 47 x 60 x 12
= 33840 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 33840 ÷ 9
= 3760 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 38 - 34
= 4 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 47 x 60 x 4
= 11280 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
11280 cm
3 = 11.28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3760 cm
3; (b) 11.28 ℓ
