A rectangular tank measuring 63 cm by 47 cm by 42 cm was filled with water to a height of 23 cm at first. After 7 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 23
= 8 cm
Total volume of water added
= 47 x 63 x 8
= 23688 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 23688 ÷ 7
= 3384 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 7 jugs of water were poured in
= 42 - 31
= 11 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 47 x 63 x 11
= 32571 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
32571 cm
3 = 32.571 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3384 cm
3; (b) 32.571 ℓ
