A rectangular tank measuring 62 cm by 45 cm by 40 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 27
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 45 x 62 x 7
= 19530 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 19530 ÷ 9
= 2170 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 40 - 34
= 6 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 45 x 62 x 6
= 16740 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
16740 cm
3 = 16.74 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2170 cm
3; (b) 16.74 ℓ
