A rectangular tank measuring 65 cm by 48 cm by 37 cm was filled with water to a height of 30 cm at first. After 8 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 30
= 3 cm
Total volume of water added
= 48 x 65 x 3
= 9360 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 9360 ÷ 8
= 1170 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 8 jugs of water were poured in
= 37 - 33
= 4 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 48 x 65 x 4
= 12480 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
12480 cm
3 = 12.48 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1170 cm
3; (b) 12.48 ℓ
