A rectangular tank measuring 63 cm by 50 cm by 43 cm was filled with water to a height of 24 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 24
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 50 x 63 x 7
= 22050 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 22050 ÷ 6
= 3675 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 43 - 31
= 12 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 50 x 63 x 12
= 37800 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
37800 cm
3 = 37.8 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3675 cm
3; (b) 37.8 ℓ
