A rectangular tank measuring 60 cm by 48 cm by 42 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 27
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 48 x 60 x 6
= 17280 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 17280 ÷ 9
= 1920 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 42 - 33
= 9 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 48 x 60 x 9
= 25920 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
25920 cm
3 = 25.92 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1920 cm
3; (b) 25.92 ℓ
