A rectangular tank measuring 56 cm by 47 cm by 38 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 8 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 33 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 33 - 27
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 47 x 56 x 6
= 15792 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 15792 ÷ 8
= 1974 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 8 jugs of water were poured in
= 38 - 33
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 47 x 56 x 5
= 13160 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
13160 cm
3 = 13.16 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1974 cm
3; (b) 13.16 ℓ
