A rectangular tank measuring 59 cm by 45 cm by 40 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.

1. Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
2. How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)

Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 27
= 4 cm

Total volume of water added
= 45 x 59 x 4
= 10620 cm³ 

Volume of water in each jug
= 10620 ÷ 6
= 1770 cm³

(b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 40 - 31
= 9 cm

Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 45 x 59 x 9
= 23895 cm³

1000 cm³ = 1 ℓ
23895 cm³ = 23.895 ℓ
