A rectangular tank measuring 57 cm by 48 cm by 39 cm was filled with water to a height of 29 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 29
= 5 cm
Total volume of water added
= 48 x 57 x 5
= 13680 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 13680 ÷ 9
= 1520 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 39 - 34
= 5 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 48 x 57 x 5
= 13680 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
13680 cm
3 = 13.68 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1520 cm
3; (b) 13.68 ℓ
