A rectangular tank measuring 57 cm by 47 cm by 35 cm was filled with water to a height of 27 cm at first. After 6 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 27
= 4 cm
Total volume of water added
= 47 x 57 x 4
= 10716 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 10716 ÷ 6
= 1786 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 6 jugs of water were poured in
= 35 - 31
= 4 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 47 x 57 x 4
= 10716 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
10716 cm
3 = 10.716 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1786 cm
3; (b) 10.716 ℓ
