A rectangular tank measuring 64 cm by 53 cm by 39 cm was filled with water to a height of 24 cm at first. After 7 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 24
= 7 cm
Total volume of water added
= 53 x 64 x 7
= 23744 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 23744 ÷ 7
= 3392 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 7 jugs of water were poured in
= 39 - 31
= 8 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 53 x 64 x 8
= 27136 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
27136 cm
3 = 27.136 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3392 cm
3; (b) 27.136 ℓ
