A rectangular tank measuring 59 cm by 52 cm by 36 cm was filled with water to a height of 28 cm at first. After 8 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 34 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 34 - 28
= 6 cm
Total volume of water added
= 52 x 59 x 6
= 18408 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 18408 ÷ 8
= 2301 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 8 jugs of water were poured in
= 36 - 34
= 2 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 52 x 59 x 2
= 6136 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
6136 cm
3 = 6.136 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2301 cm
3; (b) 6.136 ℓ
