A rectangular tank measuring 56 cm by 45 cm by 42 cm was filled with water to a height of 22 cm at first. After 9 completely filled identical jugs of water were poured into the tank, the new water level in the tank became 31 cm.
- Find the volume of water in each jug in cubic centimetres.
- How much more water would be needed to fill the tank completely? (Give your answer in litres.)
(a)
Difference in the height of the new and old water level
= 31 - 22
= 9 cm
Total volume of water added
= 45 x 56 x 9
= 22680 cm
3 Volume of water in each jug
= 22680 ÷ 9
= 2520 cm
3 (b)
Difference in the height of the tank and the water after 9 jugs of water were poured in
= 42 - 31
= 11 cm
Volume of water needed to fill the tank completely
= 45 x 56 x 11
= 27720 cm
3 1000 cm
3 = 1 ℓ
27720 cm
3 = 27.72 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2520 cm
3; (b) 27.72 ℓ
