At a farm, there were
58 as many turkeys and chickens. The farmer added another 28 turkeys but sold away 40 chickens. In the end, there were 7 chickens more than turkeys. How many turkeys and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Turkeys |
Chickens |
Before |
5 u |
8 u |
Change |
+ 28 |
- 40 |
After |
5 u + 28 |
8 u - 40 |
If the farmer had another 7 turkeys in the end, the number of turkeys and (chickens) would be the same.
8 u - 40 = 5 u + 28 + 7
8 u - 5 u = 35 + 40
3 u = 75
1 u = 75 ÷ 3 = 25
Number of chickens and turkeys in the end
= 5 u + 28 + 8 u - 40
= 5 u + 8 u + 28 - 40
= 13 u - 12
= 13 x 25 - 12
= 313
