At a farm, there were
57 as many turkeys and chickens. The farmer added another 26 turkeys but sold away 41 chickens. In the end, there were 5 chickens more than turkeys. How many turkeys and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Turkeys |
Chickens |
Before |
5 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 26 |
- 41 |
After |
5 u + 26 |
7 u - 41 |
If the farmer had another 5 turkeys in the end, the number of turkeys and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 41 = 5 u + 26 + 5
7 u - 5 u = 31 + 41
2 u = 72
1 u = 72 ÷ 2 = 36
Number of chickens and turkeys in the end
= 5 u + 26 + 7 u - 41
= 5 u + 7 u + 26 - 41
= 12 u - 15
= 12 x 36 - 15
= 417
