At a farm, there were
35 as many pigs and turkeys. The farmer added another 27 pigs but sold away 39 turkeys. In the end, there were 4 turkeys more than pigs. How many pigs and turkeys were there altogether in the end?
|
Pigs |
Turkeys |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 27 |
- 39 |
After |
3 u + 27 |
5 u - 39 |
If the farmer had another 4 pigs in the end, the number of pigs and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 39 = 3 u + 27 + 4
5 u - 3 u = 31 + 39
2 u = 70
1 u = 70 ÷ 2 = 35
Number of turkeys and pigs in the end
= 3 u + 27 + 5 u - 39
= 3 u + 5 u + 27 - 39
= 8 u - 12
= 8 x 35 - 12
= 268
