At a farm, there were
38 as many pigs and sheep. The farmer added another 23 pigs but sold away 37 sheep. In the end, there were 5 sheep more than pigs. How many pigs and sheep were there altogether in the end?
|
Pigs |
Sheep |
Before |
3 u |
8 u |
Change |
+ 23 |
- 37 |
After |
3 u + 23 |
8 u - 37 |
If the farmer had another 5 pigs in the end, the number of pigs and (chickens) would be the same.
8 u - 37 = 3 u + 23 + 5
8 u - 3 u = 28 + 37
5 u = 65
1 u = 65 ÷ 5 = 13
Number of sheep and pigs in the end
= 3 u + 23 + 8 u - 37
= 3 u + 8 u + 23 - 37
= 11 u - 14
= 11 x 13 - 14
= 129
