At a farm, there were
58 as many goats and pigs. The farmer added another 33 goats but sold away 42 pigs. In the end, there were 3 pigs more than goats. How many goats and pigs were there altogether in the end?
|
Goats |
Pigs |
Before |
5 u |
8 u |
Change |
+ 33 |
- 42 |
After |
5 u + 33 |
8 u - 42 |
If the farmer had another 3 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
8 u - 42 = 5 u + 33 + 3
8 u - 5 u = 36 + 42
3 u = 78
1 u = 78 ÷ 3 = 26
Number of pigs and goats in the end
= 5 u + 33 + 8 u - 42
= 5 u + 8 u + 33 - 42
= 13 u - 9
= 13 x 26 - 9
= 329
