At a farm, there were
59 as many geese and ducks. The farmer added another 33 geese but sold away 42 ducks. In the end, there were 9 ducks more than geese. How many geese and ducks were there altogether in the end?

Geese |
Ducks |
Before |
5 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 33 |
- 42 |
After |
5 u + 33 |
9 u - 42 |
If the farmer had another 9 geese in the end, the number of geese and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 42 = 5 u + 33 + 9
9 u - 5 u = 42 + 42
4 u = 84
1 u = 84 ÷ 4 = 21
Number of ducks and geese in the end
= 5 u + 33 + 9 u - 42
= 5 u + 9 u + 33 - 42
= 14 u - 9
= 14 x 21 - 9
= 285
