At a farm, there were
35 as many sheep and geese. The farmer added another 22 sheep but sold away 43 geese. In the end, there were 9 geese more than sheep. How many sheep and geese were there altogether in the end?
|
Sheep |
Geese |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 22 |
- 43 |
After |
3 u + 22 |
5 u - 43 |
If the farmer had another 9 sheep in the end, the number of sheep and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 43 = 3 u + 22 + 9
5 u - 3 u = 31 + 43
2 u = 74
1 u = 74 ÷ 2 = 37
Number of geese and sheep in the end
= 3 u + 22 + 5 u - 43
= 3 u + 5 u + 22 - 43
= 8 u - 21
= 8 x 37 - 21
= 275
