At a farm, there were
59 as many pigs and chickens. The farmer added another 25 pigs but sold away 36 chickens. In the end, there were 3 chickens more than pigs. How many pigs and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Pigs |
Chickens |
Before |
5 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 25 |
- 36 |
After |
5 u + 25 |
9 u - 36 |
If the farmer had another 3 pigs in the end, the number of pigs and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 36 = 5 u + 25 + 3
9 u - 5 u = 28 + 36
4 u = 64
1 u = 64 ÷ 4 = 16
Number of chickens and pigs in the end
= 5 u + 25 + 9 u - 36
= 5 u + 9 u + 25 - 36
= 14 u - 11
= 14 x 16 - 11
= 213
