At a farm, there were
58 as many ducks and goats. The farmer added another 26 ducks but sold away 35 goats. In the end, there were 8 goats more than ducks. How many ducks and goats were there altogether in the end?

Ducks |
Goats |
Before |
5 u |
8 u |
Change |
+ 26 |
- 35 |
After |
5 u + 26 |
8 u - 35 |
If the farmer had another 8 ducks in the end, the number of ducks and (chickens) would be the same.
8 u - 35 = 5 u + 26 + 8
8 u - 5 u = 34 + 35
3 u = 69
1 u = 69 ÷ 3 = 23
Number of goats and ducks in the end
= 5 u + 26 + 8 u - 35
= 5 u + 8 u + 26 - 35
= 13 u - 9
= 13 x 23 - 9
= 290
