At a farm, there were
35 as many goats and pigs. The farmer added another 26 goats but sold away 43 pigs. In the end, there were 9 pigs more than goats. How many goats and pigs were there altogether in the end?
|
Goats |
Pigs |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 26 |
- 43 |
After |
3 u + 26 |
5 u - 43 |
If the farmer had another 9 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 43 = 3 u + 26 + 9
5 u - 3 u = 35 + 43
2 u = 78
1 u = 78 ÷ 2 = 39
Number of pigs and goats in the end
= 3 u + 26 + 5 u - 43
= 3 u + 5 u + 26 - 43
= 8 u - 17
= 8 x 39 - 17
= 295
