At a farm, there were
57 as many pigs and turkeys. The farmer added another 23 pigs but sold away 47 turkeys. In the end, there were 8 turkeys more than pigs. How many pigs and turkeys were there altogether in the end?
|
Pigs |
Turkeys |
Before |
5 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 23 |
- 47 |
After |
5 u + 23 |
7 u - 47 |
If the farmer had another 8 pigs in the end, the number of pigs and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 47 = 5 u + 23 + 8
7 u - 5 u = 31 + 47
2 u = 78
1 u = 78 ÷ 2 = 39
Number of turkeys and pigs in the end
= 5 u + 23 + 7 u - 47
= 5 u + 7 u + 23 - 47
= 12 u - 24
= 12 x 39 - 24
= 444
