At a farm, there were
611 as many cows and goats. The farmer added another 27 cows but sold away 35 goats. In the end, there were 3 goats more than cows. How many cows and goats were there altogether in the end?

Cows |
Goats |
Before |
6 u |
11 u |
Change |
+ 27 |
- 35 |
After |
6 u + 27 |
11 u - 35 |
If the farmer had another 3 cows in the end, the number of cows and (chickens) would be the same.
11 u - 35 = 6 u + 27 + 3
11 u - 6 u = 30 + 35
5 u = 65
1 u = 65 ÷ 5 = 13
Number of goats and cows in the end
= 6 u + 27 + 11 u - 35
= 6 u + 11 u + 27 - 35
= 17 u - 8
= 17 x 13 - 8
= 213
