At a farm, there were
57 as many chickens and cows. The farmer added another 28 chickens but sold away 39 cows. In the end, there were 9 cows more than chickens. How many chickens and cows were there altogether in the end?
|
Chickens |
Cows |
Before |
5 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 28 |
- 39 |
After |
5 u + 28 |
7 u - 39 |
If the farmer had another 9 chickens in the end, the number of chickens and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 39 = 5 u + 28 + 9
7 u - 5 u = 37 + 39
2 u = 76
1 u = 76 ÷ 2 = 38
Number of cows and chickens in the end
= 5 u + 28 + 7 u - 39
= 5 u + 7 u + 28 - 39
= 12 u - 11
= 12 x 38 - 11
= 445
