At a farm, there were
49 as many geese and pigs. The farmer added another 34 geese but sold away 38 pigs. In the end, there were 8 pigs more than geese. How many geese and pigs were there altogether in the end?
|
Geese |
Pigs |
Before |
4 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 34 |
- 38 |
After |
4 u + 34 |
9 u - 38 |
If the farmer had another 8 geese in the end, the number of geese and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 38 = 4 u + 34 + 8
9 u - 4 u = 42 + 38
5 u = 80
1 u = 80 ÷ 5 = 16
Number of pigs and geese in the end
= 4 u + 34 + 9 u - 38
= 4 u + 9 u + 34 - 38
= 13 u - 4
= 13 x 16 - 4
= 204
