At a farm, there were
79 as many goats and pigs. The farmer added another 31 goats but sold away 46 pigs. In the end, there were 7 pigs more than goats. How many goats and pigs were there altogether in the end?

Goats |
Pigs |
Before |
7 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 31 |
- 46 |
After |
7 u + 31 |
9 u - 46 |
If the farmer had another 7 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 46 = 7 u + 31 + 7
9 u - 7 u = 38 + 46
2 u = 84
1 u = 84 ÷ 2 = 42
Number of pigs and goats in the end
= 7 u + 31 + 9 u - 46
= 7 u + 9 u + 31 - 46
= 16 u - 15
= 16 x 42 - 15
= 657
