At a farm, there were
35 as many turkeys and chickens. The farmer added another 24 turkeys but sold away 36 chickens. In the end, there were 4 chickens more than turkeys. How many turkeys and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Turkeys |
Chickens |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 24 |
- 36 |
After |
3 u + 24 |
5 u - 36 |
If the farmer had another 4 turkeys in the end, the number of turkeys and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 36 = 3 u + 24 + 4
5 u - 3 u = 28 + 36
2 u = 64
1 u = 64 ÷ 2 = 32
Number of chickens and turkeys in the end
= 3 u + 24 + 5 u - 36
= 3 u + 5 u + 24 - 36
= 8 u - 12
= 8 x 32 - 12
= 244
