At a farm, there were
35 as many goats and geese. The farmer added another 28 goats but sold away 45 geese. In the end, there were 5 geese more than goats. How many goats and geese were there altogether in the end?
|
Goats |
Geese |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 28 |
- 45 |
After |
3 u + 28 |
5 u - 45 |
If the farmer had another 5 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 45 = 3 u + 28 + 5
5 u - 3 u = 33 + 45
2 u = 78
1 u = 78 ÷ 2 = 39
Number of geese and goats in the end
= 3 u + 28 + 5 u - 45
= 3 u + 5 u + 28 - 45
= 8 u - 17
= 8 x 39 - 17
= 295
