At a farm, there were
49 as many turkeys and chickens. The farmer added another 30 turkeys but sold away 42 chickens. In the end, there were 8 chickens more than turkeys. How many turkeys and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Turkeys |
Chickens |
Before |
4 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 30 |
- 42 |
After |
4 u + 30 |
9 u - 42 |
If the farmer had another 8 turkeys in the end, the number of turkeys and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 42 = 4 u + 30 + 8
9 u - 4 u = 38 + 42
5 u = 80
1 u = 80 ÷ 5 = 16
Number of chickens and turkeys in the end
= 4 u + 30 + 9 u - 42
= 4 u + 9 u + 30 - 42
= 13 u - 12
= 13 x 16 - 12
= 196
