At a farm, there were
37 as many sheep and pigs. The farmer added another 24 sheep but sold away 47 pigs. In the end, there were 9 pigs more than sheep. How many sheep and pigs were there altogether in the end?
|
Sheep |
Pigs |
Before |
3 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 24 |
- 47 |
After |
3 u + 24 |
7 u - 47 |
If the farmer had another 9 sheep in the end, the number of sheep and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 47 = 3 u + 24 + 9
7 u - 3 u = 33 + 47
4 u = 80
1 u = 80 ÷ 4 = 20
Number of pigs and sheep in the end
= 3 u + 24 + 7 u - 47
= 3 u + 7 u + 24 - 47
= 10 u - 23
= 10 x 20 - 23
= 177
