At a farm, there were
38 as many cows and ducks. The farmer added another 34 cows but sold away 47 ducks. In the end, there were 4 ducks more than cows. How many cows and ducks were there altogether in the end?
|
Cows |
Ducks |
Before |
3 u |
8 u |
Change |
+ 34 |
- 47 |
After |
3 u + 34 |
8 u - 47 |
If the farmer had another 4 cows in the end, the number of cows and (chickens) would be the same.
8 u - 47 = 3 u + 34 + 4
8 u - 3 u = 38 + 47
5 u = 85
1 u = 85 ÷ 5 = 17
Number of ducks and cows in the end
= 3 u + 34 + 8 u - 47
= 3 u + 8 u + 34 - 47
= 11 u - 13
= 11 x 17 - 13
= 174
