At a farm, there were
47 as many geese and turkeys. The farmer added another 33 geese but sold away 36 turkeys. In the end, there were 9 turkeys more than geese. How many geese and turkeys were there altogether in the end?

Geese |
Turkeys |
Before |
4 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 33 |
- 36 |
After |
4 u + 33 |
7 u - 36 |
If the farmer had another 9 geese in the end, the number of geese and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 36 = 4 u + 33 + 9
7 u - 4 u = 42 + 36
3 u = 78
1 u = 78 ÷ 3 = 26
Number of turkeys and geese in the end
= 4 u + 33 + 7 u - 36
= 4 u + 7 u + 33 - 36
= 11 u - 3
= 11 x 26 - 3
= 283
