At a farm, there were
79 as many goats and ducks. The farmer added another 28 goats but sold away 42 ducks. In the end, there were 2 ducks more than goats. How many goats and ducks were there altogether in the end?

Goats |
Ducks |
Before |
7 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 28 |
- 42 |
After |
7 u + 28 |
9 u - 42 |
If the farmer had another 2 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 42 = 7 u + 28 + 2
9 u - 7 u = 30 + 42
2 u = 72
1 u = 72 ÷ 2 = 36
Number of ducks and goats in the end
= 7 u + 28 + 9 u - 42
= 7 u + 9 u + 28 - 42
= 16 u - 14
= 16 x 36 - 14
= 562
