At a farm, there were
37 as many turkeys and pigs. The farmer added another 31 turkeys but sold away 42 pigs. In the end, there were 3 pigs more than turkeys. How many turkeys and pigs were there altogether in the end?
|
Turkeys |
Pigs |
Before |
3 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 31 |
- 42 |
After |
3 u + 31 |
7 u - 42 |
If the farmer had another 3 turkeys in the end, the number of turkeys and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 42 = 3 u + 31 + 3
7 u - 3 u = 34 + 42
4 u = 76
1 u = 76 ÷ 4 = 19
Number of pigs and turkeys in the end
= 3 u + 31 + 7 u - 42
= 3 u + 7 u + 31 - 42
= 10 u - 11
= 10 x 19 - 11
= 179
