At a farm, there were
35 as many geese and ducks. The farmer added another 31 geese but sold away 46 ducks. In the end, there were 3 ducks more than geese. How many geese and ducks were there altogether in the end?
|
Geese |
Ducks |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 31 |
- 46 |
After |
3 u + 31 |
5 u - 46 |
If the farmer had another 3 geese in the end, the number of geese and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 46 = 3 u + 31 + 3
5 u - 3 u = 34 + 46
2 u = 80
1 u = 80 ÷ 2 = 40
Number of ducks and geese in the end
= 3 u + 31 + 5 u - 46
= 3 u + 5 u + 31 - 46
= 8 u - 15
= 8 x 40 - 15
= 305
