At a farm, there were
35 as many goats and chickens. The farmer added another 20 goats but sold away 41 chickens. In the end, there were 9 chickens more than goats. How many goats and chickens were there altogether in the end?
|
Goats |
Chickens |
Before |
3 u |
5 u |
Change |
+ 20 |
- 41 |
After |
3 u + 20 |
5 u - 41 |
If the farmer had another 9 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
5 u - 41 = 3 u + 20 + 9
5 u - 3 u = 29 + 41
2 u = 70
1 u = 70 ÷ 2 = 35
Number of chickens and goats in the end
= 3 u + 20 + 5 u - 41
= 3 u + 5 u + 20 - 41
= 8 u - 21
= 8 x 35 - 21
= 259
