At a farm, there were
310 as many cows and sheep. The farmer added another 23 cows but sold away 38 sheep. In the end, there were 9 sheep more than cows. How many cows and sheep were there altogether in the end?

Cows |
Sheep |
Before |
3 u |
10 u |
Change |
+ 23 |
- 38 |
After |
3 u + 23 |
10 u - 38 |
If the farmer had another 9 cows in the end, the number of cows and (chickens) would be the same.
10 u - 38 = 3 u + 23 + 9
10 u - 3 u = 32 + 38
7 u = 70
1 u = 70 ÷ 7 = 10
Number of sheep and cows in the end
= 3 u + 23 + 10 u - 38
= 3 u + 10 u + 23 - 38
= 13 u - 15
= 13 x 10 - 15
= 115
Answer(s): 115
