At a farm, there were
47 as many goats and pigs. The farmer added another 26 goats but sold away 39 pigs. In the end, there were 7 pigs more than goats. How many goats and pigs were there altogether in the end?

Goats |
Pigs |
Before |
4 u |
7 u |
Change |
+ 26 |
- 39 |
After |
4 u + 26 |
7 u - 39 |
If the farmer had another 7 goats in the end, the number of goats and (chickens) would be the same.
7 u - 39 = 4 u + 26 + 7
7 u - 4 u = 33 + 39
3 u = 72
1 u = 72 ÷ 3 = 24
Number of pigs and goats in the end
= 4 u + 26 + 7 u - 39
= 4 u + 7 u + 26 - 39
= 11 u - 13
= 11 x 24 - 13
= 251
