At a farm, there were
59 as many ducks and geese. The farmer added another 30 ducks but sold away 41 geese. In the end, there were 9 geese more than ducks. How many ducks and geese were there altogether in the end?

Ducks |
Geese |
Before |
5 u |
9 u |
Change |
+ 30 |
- 41 |
After |
5 u + 30 |
9 u - 41 |
If the farmer had another 9 ducks in the end, the number of ducks and (chickens) would be the same.
9 u - 41 = 5 u + 30 + 9
9 u - 5 u = 39 + 41
4 u = 80
1 u = 80 ÷ 4 = 20
Number of geese and ducks in the end
= 5 u + 30 + 9 u - 41
= 5 u + 9 u + 30 - 41
= 14 u - 11
= 14 x 20 - 11
= 269
Answer(s): 269
