A bottle contained 4.7 ℓ more water than a watering can. After some water was poured from the bottle to the watering can, both the bottle and the watering can had 8 ℓ of water each. How much water was there in the watering can at first?

Volume of water in the watering can = 1 u
Volume of water in the bottle = 1 u + 4.7
Total volume of water
= 1 u + 1 u + 4.7
= 2 u + 4.7
Total volume of water
= 2 x 8
= 16 ℓ
When water is poured from the bottle to the watering can, the total volume remains unchanged.
2 u + 4.7 = 16
2 u = 16 - 4.7
2 u = 11.3
1 u = 11.3 ÷ 2 = 5.65
Volume of water in the watering can at first = 5.65 ℓ
Answer(s): 5.65 ℓ
