A pail contained 2.1 ℓ more water than a bottle. After some water was poured from the pail to the bottle, both the pail and the bottle had 8 ℓ of water each. How much water was there in the bottle at first?

Volume of water in the bottle = 1 u
Volume of water in the pail = 1 u + 2.1
Total volume of water
= 1 u + 1 u + 2.1
= 2 u + 2.1
Total volume of water
= 2 x 8
= 16 ℓ
When water is poured from the pail to the bottle, the total volume remains unchanged.
2 u + 2.1 = 16
2 u = 16 - 2.1
2 u = 13.9
1 u = 13.9 ÷ 2 = 6.95
Volume of water in the bottle at first = 6.95 ℓ
Answer(s): 6.95 ℓ
