A tank contained 3.5 ℓ more water than a can. After some water was poured from the tank to the can, both the tank and the can had 7 ℓ of water each. How much water was there in the can at first?

Volume of water in the can = 1 u
Volume of water in the tank = 1 u + 3.5
Total volume of water
= 1 u + 1 u + 3.5
= 2 u + 3.5
Total volume of water
= 2 x 7
= 14 ℓ
When water is poured from the tank to the can, the total volume remains unchanged.
2 u + 3.5 = 14
2 u = 14 - 3.5
2 u = 10.5
1 u = 10.5 ÷ 2 = 5.25
Volume of water in the can at first = 5.25 ℓ
Answer(s): 5.25 ℓ
