A pot contained 3.5 ℓ more water than a pail. After some water was poured from the pot to the pail, both the pot and the pail had 4 ℓ of water each. How much water was there in the pail at first?

Volume of water in the pail = 1 u
Volume of water in the pot = 1 u + 3.5
Total volume of water
= 1 u + 1 u + 3.5
= 2 u + 3.5
Total volume of water
= 2 x 4
= 8 ℓ
When water is poured from the pot to the pail, the total volume remains unchanged.
2 u + 3.5 = 8
2 u = 8 - 3.5
2 u = 4.5
1 u = 4.5 ÷ 2 = 2.25
Volume of water in the pail at first = 2.25 ℓ
Answer(s): 2.25 ℓ
